Idaho Fish and Game, RMEF Expand Critical Wildlife Winter Range

The significant expansion underscores both organizations' commitment to wildlife conservation and habitat management, specifically designed to support up to 5,500 elk, 3,000 mule deer, and other wildlife during the critical winter months.

Essential Ecological Efforts

The Tex Creek WMA, located just west of Idaho Falls, is integral to the region's ecological framework. It provides a vital winter range for thousands of big game animals that migrate across millions of acres in eastern Idaho.

"The enhancement of the WMA through this additional acreage is pivotal for the survival of these species during the harsh winter months," says Rob Cavallaro, Idaho Fish and Game Upper Snake Region habitat manager. 

He further emphasizes the importance of this expansion in providing quality wildlife habitat and ensuring sustainable access for hunters and wildlife enthusiasts in the future. Over the years, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has offered its unwavering support and significant contributions to the Tex Creek WMA, for which Cavallaro is grateful.

"Their [the RMEF's] partnership has been instrumental in securing this acquisition, marking another milestone in our long-standing collaboration to conserve and enhance wildlife habitat in Idaho."

Living in Symbiosis With Nature

The Tex Creek WMA is a diverse ecosystem comprising state and federal lands managed by Idaho Fish and Game. It serves as a critical habitat for elk and mule deer, some of which undertake migrations of up to 70 miles to reach this sanctuary. Additionally, the area supports a variety of other species, including moose, Columbian-tailed grouse, upland and migratory birds, and nongame species. 

This mixture of sagebrush, bitterbrush, grasslands, aspen stands, and other plant diversity enriches the habitat and provides essential resources for wildlife survival and reproduction.

Kyle Weaver, president and CEO of RMEF, stresses the importance of every piece of conserved habitat, especially those providing winter range crucial for wildlife. "Such areas offer life-sustaining forage, water, cover, and space that are indispensable for the survival of wildlife."

Four Decades of Support

Founded in 1984, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has led conservation efforts, preserving more than 8.9 million acres for elk and other wildlife. With hunter support, the foundation also emphasizes enhancing public access, promoting science-based resource management, and upholding America's hunting traditions.

RMEF contributed $187,500 to facilitate this project, showcasing its dedication to wildlife conservation and habitat management. This expansion is part of successful collaborations between Idaho Fish and Game and RMEF.

Together, they have engaged in numerous habitat enhancement projects, worked with landowners, and coordinated with the Bureau of Land Management to integrate critical sections of elk habitat into the WMA. Since 1997, their joint efforts have resulted in 3,260 acres added to the WMA, enhancing landscape connectivity, improving ecosystem health, and expanding public access for recreation and hunting.

Untold Economic Impact

Per the latest figures, outdoor recreation and goods earned $3.4 billion in 2022. Hunting, shooting, and trapping contributed $217 million to Idaho’s economy in 2022. According to the Idaho Statesman, it was the second most lucrative industry behind RVing.

With this boom, jobs have grown to support outdoor recreation. Thanks to hunting, hiking, and wildlife conservation, more than 35,000 people are employed in Idaho.

The Idaho Fish and Game and RMEF have collaborated to expand the Tex Creek WMA and nurture its biodiversity. Through careful management and conservation practices, they have ensured the preservation of the area's natural beauty and ecological significance.

These efforts are vital for sustaining Idaho's rich biodiversity, providing a wildlife sanctuary, and offering unparalleled outdoor recreation and hunting opportunities.
