On Saturday, the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities (BOPU) opened the doors of its new hydroelectric generation facility to the public.

It’s located at the R.L. Sherard Water Treatment Plant where it provides more than enough energy to power the whole plant. The plant has been around since 2002 and no longer must solely rely on energy from the power grid. The $7.4 million hydroelectric project was recently constructed and went online in July.

Attendees view the generator during an open house at the R.L. Sherard Hydroelectric Generation Facility on Saturday. According to the Board of Public Utilities (BOPU), the generator will use six million gallons a day to produce around 340 kilowatts. “In the summer, up to 16 million gallons per day can flow through the generator, producing up to 850 kilowatts. Of these amounts, the water treatment plant will use around 150 to 275 kilowatts. The rest will go on the electrical grid.”

Water Reclamation Division Manager Matt Buelow, left, and Water Treatment Plant Supervisor Nick Dennis pose for a portrait during an open house at the R.L. Sherard Hydroelectric Generation Facility on Saturday. “The open house is to invite people to see that this is just another aspect to reduce our footprint,” said Dennis. “It’s been a lot of awe. The reaction has been really good.”
