The Green River Valley Land Trust Corridor Conservation Campaign (GRVLT) received a $400,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) in April to modify or reconstruct existing fences along a portion of the pronghorn migration route in the Upper Green at no cost to landowners. The fund will match $1 million donated by the Jonah Interagency Mitigation and Reclamation Office last June.
“We can’t thank NFWF enough for its generous gift,” said GRVLT Executive Director Lara Ryan. “Their support means we’ve raised more than three-quarters of the funds necessary to put the first phase of this important project on the ground this year.”
“The migration of pronghorn from Grand Teton National Park through the sagebrush landscape of Sublette County is a national treasure. We can maintain the freedom of these pronghorn to migrate, in part by working in cooperation with local ranchers to make fences more wildlife-friendly,” said Mark F. Rockefeller, chairman of the foundation’s board.
NFWF’s grant will help GRVLT work with interested landowners to improve roughly 80 miles of existing fence in the Upper Green for livestock and wildlife, particularly the pronghorn that migrate between Grand Teton and southern Sublette County each year. These improvements are cost-free to landowners and should be complete by early fall this year. The work represents the first phase of GRVLT’s five-year effort to improve 500 miles of fencing for livestock and wildlife around Sublette County.
A number of non-traditional partners have supported the project already, including the Bridger-Teton National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, EnerCrest, Environmental Defense Fund, JIO, Mule Deer Foundation, Patagonia, Safari Club International, Stealth Cam, Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resource Trust, and a variety of individuals.
