YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK – Visits to Yellowstone National Park this summer could be down from last year, but the park’s concessionaire hopes an “11th-hour” spurt will help fill park hotels.

Jim McCaleb, who heads Xanterra Parks and Resorts in Yellowstone, said that while advance reservations for the park’s upcoming summer season are “a little softer” than the last several years and are down about 14 percent, one has to remember that last year was a great year for Yellowstone visits.

“We’re hoping for some late, 11th-hour reservations to come in here just prior to the summer,” McCaleb said. “We feel pretty fortunate that we’re only down 14 percent at this time. We have heard other folks around the region who are little softer than we are at this point.”

“National parks, historically, weather these types of times fairly well, and we’re hoping this is one of those times,” he said. “That will benefit not only the parks up here in the northwestern corner of the state but the entire state as well.”

McCaleb said winter visits to Yellowstone have been off about 15 percent on average, with snowmobile traffic down.

“It could be a whole lot worse,” he said. “We feel pretty fortunate, given the times.”
