EVANSTON, Ill. — Industrial employment in Wyoming increased another 2.4 percent over the past twelve months, according to the 2009 Wyoming Manufacturers Directory, a compilation of state industry published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI).

MNI (www.manufacturersnews.com) reports Wyoming gained 799 industrial jobs from September 2007 to September 2008, continuing the gains the state has seen over the past few years.

According to earlier MNI reports, Wyoming saw a 3 percent gain in industrial jobs between September 2006 and 2007, and a 4.9 percent gain over MNI’s 2005-2006 survey period.

“While most other states have been losing manufacturing jobs to technology, automation and outsourcing, Wyoming’s natural resources and its proximity to the Canadian market have helped the state increase exports and retain industrial facilities,” says Tom Dubin, President of the MNI, which has been surveying industrial sectors since 1912.

Manufacturers’ News reports Wyoming is home to 1,336 manufacturers employing 33,260 workers. MNI reports 50 percent of manufacturers in Wyoming employ five or fewer workers, compared to the national average of 34 percent.

MNI reports roughly half of the state’s industrial workers are employed in the oil and gas extraction, minerals and mining sectors, representing 16,876 jobs.

Gillette is the state’s industrial capital with 5,636 industrial jobs, up 4.4 percent over the year. Second-ranked Casper accounts for 4,831 of the state’s manufacturing jobs, up 4.3 percent over the past twelve months, while third-ranked Wright reported a gain of 8.7 percent and currently accounts for 3,354 of the state’s jobs. Rock Springs is home to 2,479 of the state’s industrial jobs, up 5.4 percent, while Cheyenne is home to 2,089 with no significant change reported over the year.
