CHEYENNE – Wyoming’s Administration and Information Department will be led by a longtime state employee, Mike McVay, Gov. Dave Freudenthal announced today.

Calling him an insightful, pragmatic individual with vast understanding of state government, Freudenthal appointed McVay as director of the Wyoming Administration and Information Department. McVay will assume the post on Jan. 31, 2008.

“The Executive Branch has long relied on Mike for his careful study of the state’s budget, his innovative way of thinking and his discerning mind. I know his considerable skills and understanding of the department will help him in managing this agency,” Freudenthal said.

The department is one of the largest state agencies with multiple divisions including the office of the director, budget, construction management, economic analysis, general services, human resources, information technology, professional licensing boards, the office of the Chief Information Officer and the State Library.

McVay, who began his long service to the department’s Budget Division in 1977, called the appointment a great privilege.

“I was honored when Gov. Freudenthal appointed me to be his budget director,” McVay said. “I am even more honored now, and I hope to live up to his expectations. I look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to add to the successes of my predecessors.”

McVay has served as director of the Budget Division since 2003. The division offers assistance and technical expertise to the Governor, the Legislature, and state agencies on the allocation of state resources to best accomplish the goals and objectives of government programs.

Before joining the division, McVay worked as a social worker for what was then known as the Department of Health and Social Services. McVay began his career in the U.S. Army, where he served in Vietnam and earned a Bronze Star.

McVay graduated from the University of Wyoming with a master’s degree in public administration and a bachelor’s in history.
